First Work delivers high-quality, sector-responsive training designed to strengthen Ontario’s workforce development ecosystem. Our trainings support frontline practitioners, managers, and system leaders working with youth and jobseekers facing barriers to employment.

Grounded in real-world practice and informed by policy, labour market trends, and system transformation, First Work trainings focus on building practical skills, strategic insight, and shared understanding across the employment services landscape. Creating a sense of belonging starts from a place of understanding and acceptance!

EnAbling Inclusive Futures is designed to support service providers in creating accessible and inclusive services for Autistic people. It helps address the unique needs of Autistic individuals, thereby fostering environments and programming that promote acceptance and support.

The half-day workshop helps professionals understand Autism and promotes accessibility, and best practices for designing programming for Autistic people.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

Small Shifts, Big Impact: Self-Care at Work

In fast-paced, people-centred work environments, self-care is often the first thing to fall off the list even though it’s essential for sustaining our energy, focus, and impact. This training is a highly interactive, practical workshop designed to help participants move beyond theory and into action.

Through guided mindfulness, breathing techniques, chair yoga practice, and facilitated discussion, participants will explore realistic ways to embed wellness into their everyday work routines. This session emphasizes small, sustainable practices that can be used individually, with teams, and where appropriate, adapted for client-facing settings. Participants will leave with practical tools they can apply immediately, increased awareness of how stress shows up during the workday, and a simple, personalized wellness plan that supports resilience, balance, and long-term well-being at work.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Apply simple mindfulness practices to improve focus, presence, and emotional regulation during the workday
  • Use practical breathing techniques to manage stress, transitions, and high-pressure moments at work
  • Participate in and adapt a gentle chair-based movement routine
  • Identify small, realistic wellness habits that can be integrated into daily work routines

Effective Case Management Training

This course was created to assist front line employment service workers in effectively managing client volume, using a strength-based approach and maintaining quality of service. The day will include discussion of considerations, techniques and best practices, interspersed with interactive, small group activities for brainstorming and sharing. This allows for not just learning from the facilitator, but from the experience of all who participate.

Content:
a) The Integrated Case Management model.
b) The role of the Case Manager and steps in effective case management.
c) Utilizing a strength-based approach to case management.
d) Managing client volumes according to Streams.
e) Writing effective case notes.
f) Referring out.
g) Maintaining client relationships and reconnecting with lost contacts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Understanding the expectations and value of integrated case management.
  • A clear appreciation of the role of the Case Manager and how that role intersects with others inside and outside of your organization.
  • Understanding the principles of a strength-based approach to the employment counselling relationship.
  • How to effectively manage high client volumes according to Stream and addressing mis-streaming issues.
  • The ability to write effective case notes and the importance of clear documentation.
  • Making effective and timely referrals to outside organizations.
  • Utilizing effective and consistent communication with clients during their service and post-outcome.

Strategic Leadership in Public Affairs and the IES Model

This accelerated, three-part intensive is designed to equip emerging leaders and mid-managers with the strategic oversight necessary to navigate Ontario’s dynamic workforce development landscape.

The curriculum traces the historical evolution of the labor market and provides a deep-dive into the Integrated Employment Services (IES) model and the resulting transformation of Ontario’s delivery systems. Participants will go beyond day-to-day operations to examine the world of employment services through the mechanics of public affairs, governance, and regional advocacy. By bridging the gap between policy intent and community impact, leaders will gain the tools to manage capacity and drive innovation within a complex, multi-level government framework.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Assess how Pan-Canadian employment service models inform Ontario’s workforce system design and reform.
  • Evaluate the operational and strategic impacts of the IES model on organizations, regions, and communities.

Target Audience: Those working in or preparing for leadership roles in Employment Service organizations.

In Employment Service, workers are frequently advanced to supervisory or management roles without the opportunity for formal training. Although there is frequently peer mentorship, it is important for those moving into leadership roles to understand and develop competency in the basic skills required, how to incorporate their organization’s culture and values, using their own personality and style, as well as balancing the expectations of their funders. This training was created to assist new and emerging leaders in Employment Service to develop and expand on leadership skills. The training will include techniques and best practices, interspersed with interactive, small group activities and case studies for practice and sharing of ideas. This allows for learning from each other as well as from the facilitator.
